Scent of the Week: Cello

Last week, 68-year old actress and former Mouseketeer Annette Funicello was caught in a fire at in her Los Angeles home.  Fortunately, after recovering from mild smoke inhalation, she is fine. So this week we pay tribute to her by making Cello our Scent of The Week.

Cello, Funicello’s signature scent  — described in press materials as “light, clean and spicy,” — was sold exclusively at Disneyland and Walt Disney World from 1993  to 1997.  A full fragrance line including cologne and aftershave for men (as pictured above) was planned, but only the women’s fragrance was ever sold.  A portion of the proceeds were to benefit The Annette Funicello Research Fund for Neurological Diseases.

In 1955, Annette Funicello became one Walt Disney’s original Mouseketeers. Annette also co-starred in Disney-produced movies such as The Shaggy Dog and Babes in Toyland. Although uncomfortable being thought of as a singer, Annette had a number of pop record hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s. She went on to appear in a series of “Beach Party” movies with Frankie Avalon including Beach Party, Muscle Beach Party, Bikini Beach, Beach Blanket Bingo, How to Stuff a Wild Bikini and Pajama Party. In 1979, Funicello began starring in a series of television commercials for Skippy peanut butter. In 1992 she announced that she suffers from multiple sclerosis and the following year she opened the Annette Funicello Fund for Neurological Disorders at the California Community Foundation. In 1994, she published her autobiography,  A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes: My Story.
